After getting lots of questions about my career path, I thought I’d share my story, what I studied in school, how I got my first job and the decisions I’ve made to end up as a self-employed render artist.

Hi Will, thanks for these videos they are very insightful. Also thanks for the training you gave me and some colleagues a few years back when you were in London – I work at the lighting company you visited in wimbledon! What you taught me really took my rendering to the next level.

Hi Will absolutely loved this and I think this is the sort of direction I want to take my career in, sounds like I'm in the infancy stage of yours e.g 2 years out of University with 2 years working experience. What would your tips be to start off with, keep developing an advanced knowledge of these softwares alongside building a website and some sort of social media following?
Thanks a lot for you insights

This is great stuff, Will! Especially for people who are just starting their career, it's important to know that they are better off chasing experience rather than a big pay check. You did just that when you started working for FELT; it's an important take-away. Looking forward to your next videos!

After following your website/youtube and taking your online course I have been tempted to reach out with a "thanks" and some questions … really glad you are able to put this out there. I can feel a common thread, as I muscled my way through an electrical engineering degree wishing I had done ID… With just a base interest in technology, I couldn't bring myself to be an EE…. finding CGI work has exposures an area of work that truly resonates with respect to communication, technology, and creativity.
Looking forward to more.

One more question I'd like to ask. I have been using Keyshot for an year and Solidworks for almost 4. I still don't feel confident about Keyshot and some areas of Solidworks e.g Surfacing. So, would you suggest me to learn new softwares or master that I already know? I come from an engineering background and am about to start my Industrial Design Masters in January.

Thank you. This is something I wanted to ask someone since long. What book you took for Solidworks btw?

Thanks for sharing your experience! I'm in my final year of studying industrial design and trying to decide what to do onwards, job seeking or pursuing further study into interaction design… my college doesn't teach Keyshot, hoping that we learn it ourselves and so i do want to build upon that skill, it's just finding the motivation and getting started into doing that is the hardest part.

Thank you for sharing your story. I'm at that point after graduating where I don't really know what I want to do or how to do it, feeling that I don't have enough skills to do a professional work. I think I can learn a few things from hearing your experience

Thank you for sharing your experience, I hope I will be able to freelance like you one day.. I'm a student of Industrial product design and I really enjoy a lot sketching, modelling and rendering staff, i'm planning to do freelance after graduate, but guess it won't be easy before getting some work experience. Could you do a video of sharing your opinions on what skills or characteristics are needed for a freelancer, specificlly in field of rendering or product design maybe. Anyway thank you, thank for the great internet we have today letting people communicate all over the world.
